Equine podiatry treatments
Personalised treatments for every horse
At Equine Podiatry every case is studied individually. Not all horses have the same needs, so hoof treatment must be adapted to the pathology, foot conformation, degree of injury and progress of each animal.
Our work as farrier and equine podiatry specialist combines knowledge of hoof anatomy and biomechanics with different techniques and materials designed to provide the right support and protection in each situation.
The aim is to establish a personalised hoof treatment, monitoring progress and modifying the protocol whenever necessary.
Therapeutic and orthopaedic horseshoes
Depending on each horse's needs, specific orthopaedic and therapeutic horseshoes can be used, selected according to the pathology and the treatment goals.
We pay special attention to solutions developed for complex hoof pathologies and have extensive experience with NANRIC therapeutic horseshoes, designed for particular clinical situations.
In laminitis cases we also use Apex Horseshoes therapeutic shoes, developed specifically to offer different possibilities of hoof support and protection. The experience gained in our clinical cases and the results observed have made these shoes one of our tools of choice for certain laminitis cases.
Laminitis treatment
Equine laminitis requires a particularly careful assessment. Changes inside the hoof can affect the relationship between the coffin bone (P3), the hoof capsule and the structures that hold the bone within the foot.
For this reason treatment is not based solely on fitting a given horseshoe. Each laminitis case is studied individually to determine which kind of support, protection and biomechanical modification may be most appropriate.
The choice of shoe or therapeutic system can be combined with other materials and techniques, adapting the treatment to the horse's specific situation and to the evolution of the hoof.
Materials and techniques adapted to each case
Beyond therapeutic and orthopaedic horseshoes, we work with different materials and application systems that allow us to personalise treatment.
Depending on the situation, we may use:
- Specific adhesives for shoe fixation.
- Fibreglass for structural reinforcement.
- Sole support and protection materials.
- Pads and cushioning systems.
- Hoof reconstruction compounds and materials.
- Different fixation systems depending on the condition of the hoof wall.
- Therapeutic horseshoes adapted to specific pathologies.
Materials are never chosen in a standard way. Every pathology and every hoof requires a different strategy.
Equine podiatry based on individual assessment
The work of a farrier specialised in equine podiatry goes far beyond fitting a horseshoe.
Hoof evaluation, conformation analysis, movement observation and, when necessary, radiographic study provide essential information for establishing a suitable treatment.
Pathologies such as laminitis, navicular syndrome, sole injuries, hoof wall problems, hoof imbalances or biomechanical disorders may require different protocols.
That is why our approach is based on studying each horse individually and selecting the combination of trimming, therapeutic shoe, materials and application techniques that best suits its needs.
A personalised treatment for every hoof
There is no single horseshoe or single treatment valid for all horses.
Combining equine podiatry, farriery experience, therapeutic horseshoes, specialised materials and close follow-up allows us to develop individual treatments for each case.
The ultimate goal is to give the horse the right support, protection and comfort, adapting the treatment to the evolution of the pathology and the specific needs of each hoof.
